Why consider meritocratic decision making

Did you know that in a meritocratic company culture, the best idea always wins? The win is not only for the organization but also for the individual, as it ensures that everyone gets to have their voice heard

With a meritocratic process, you allow experts, minorities, introverts, and silent voices to have their say, which means you promote diversity of ideas and make the work environment more exclusive

There are three types of decision-making for organizations: autocratic, democratic, and meritocratic. Autocratic decision-making is a single person making decisions for the team.  Democratic decision-making means everyone has a voice, but there is no weighting to their opinion. On the other hand, meritocracy values everyone’s opinion then assigns weighting based on skills, attributes, and experience

If you’ve always had the loudest, most senior person in the conference room make all the decisions, it may be high time you consider implementing a meritocratic decision-making process for your company

Merita: discover our amazing story

We built Merita because we believe that there was a better way for groups to decide. In a world where the best (and loudest) communicators win, our meritocratic decision-making platform helps organizations like yourself to come to decisions faster and more objectively.

Merita was inspired by American investor and hedge fund manager Ray Dalio’s believability weighted decision making principle. Dalio is the CEO of the most successful hedge fund in history, and he attributes his success to his belief that company decisions must be based on a person’s merits.

His views about believability weighted decision making encouraged us to develop Merita. While Merita offers a different approach to Dalio’s dot collector, it uses the same principles.

How Merita Works

01.

Create decision

Analyze the problem you’re trying to solve and accurately frame it in your description. The participants that you’re inviting must be able to understand the issue clearly. Add the options that you want them to choose from.

02.

Add participant

Invite all the necessary project members. Consider adding third-party in-house experts if there are no qualified members with in-depth expertise on the subject matter. Make sure the attributes and skills match with the decision you need help with.

03.

Give the right weight to experts

Identify the people who are more believable because they have the necessary skills and experience to back their decision up. Add more weight to these experts because their opinion means more.

04.

Vote meritocratically

Ask the participants to vote. You can view the results of the democratic vote and the meritocratic vote, so you can see if there is a difference. Ideally, the results should be in agreement with each other. But if they contradict, consider discussing this with the team.

Why Merita

Give your team a voice

Say goodbye to office politics dominating the boardroom, and say hello to meritocratic decision making with Merita. If you want to have more efficient, unbiased meetings, Merita ensures that experts, minorities, and silent voices in teams are heard--regardless of their seniority.

Get your experts heard

When you're deciding on a new idea, you should always ask yourself: is this the best idea, or is it the best of the best from knowledgeable, qualified experts? Identify the most qualified people on your team based on their skills and attributes, and Merita will give more weight to their opinion when generating the results.

Make decisions faster

No more back-and-forth emails. No more painfully long text chains. Once everyone is done voting, you can publish and share the decision outcomes immediately. Toggle between the democratic voting results and the meritocratic one to see the difference. You move projects along faster and get to the finish line sooner when you see the bigger picture.

Learn from your mistakes

Have more clarity on your team’s decision-making process when conducting post-mortems, retrospectives, and after-action reviews. Because you have your team’s decision history on the platform, you’ll be able to identify what worked, what didn’t, and what could be improved.
